Azora.:* Because I'm cool, I update just in time to give you some hard tunes for the New Year. My songs are mostly rock oriented with a bit of funk, apart from the 1TYM song. And three of them are Korean. Rawk. *jams out* Oh, and I'm cheap and haven't included album photos.

[BIO]

Thee Michelle Gun Elephant is composed of Abe Futoshi (guitar), Ueo Koji (bass), Kujara Kazayuki (drums), and Chiba Yusuke (vocalist). The band's name was coined by a former bassist who mispronounced the name of The Damned's album, Machine Gun Etiquette (say it with me now!). Sadly, the band called ultimately called it quits and played their last tour ever, called "Last Heaven" before disbanding.

[REVIEW]

It seems like every time I really get into a band they disband! Ugh. Anyway, I don't think I've had a rock band jamming me this much since... Gosh. I'm not sure. Not immediately anyway. (I can name a couple rock soloists, but not a band.) I heard first of Thee Michelle Gun Elephant when I listened to Tokyo Ska Orchestra's Kanariya Naku Sora (if you're interested, request and I'll upload it), where Chiba Yusuke is featured as the MOST FABULOUS GUEST SINGER EVAH. It's on my list of favorite songs. He's just so dynamic. And it appears so is his band. This song starts out with this absolutely off-beat drum solo. And then comes Koji's awesome jazzy bass sound, which just drives into you... And after the intro, the rock god himself, Chiba Yusuke, sings in this gravelly voice... oh... To worship...

[BIO]

Kim Yoon Ah, also a soloist, heads up Jaurim's lineup as their vocalist. Lee Soon Gyu plays guitar, Kim Jin Man plays bass, and Goo Tae Hoon hammers on the drums. Lee Soon Gyu and Kim Jin Man originally played in a band called CCR, but met Kim Yoon Ah and Goo Tae Hoon and formed Ugly Duckling. In 1997 they became Jaurim, having signed with a record company. Jaurim is actually a word made of three Chinese characters. Interpreted it can mean "Purple Rainy Forest", "Forest of Purple Rain", and my personal favorite, the artistic interpretation of "Violet Rain Falling Upon the Forest".

[REVIEW]

Excellent song from Jaurim's debut album, Purple Heart. It has a pretty hard rock-funk sound. Not as funk say, as disco, but it's got a bit of funk to it. The "hardness" is all in what I believe to be the bass. Kim Yoon Ah's vocals are deep enough, and gritty enough, but she doesn't lose her jazzy soul singing this song. Truly though, the guitars are what rock this song.

[BIO]

Also apparently known as the SangSang band, Imagination is comprised of Venny on vocals, Showgy on bass, Mook (such a cute name!), and Jung Sang on drums. I know like, nothing about these people except for random things. Venny and Showgy went to Joong Ang University together though. And Jung Sang attended the LA Musician Institute.

[REVIEW]

I'm seeing a pattern here... RAWK. Anyway, I don't have the real title for "Round Down", which is in Korean and my Korean romanizer is being a ho and doesn't know what the characters stand for. If anyone wants to go to the site and do it for me, I'd love you. Like, a lot. Anyway, the beginning to this totally sounds like a James Bond theme song. It's pretty pimp. Mostly they do downbeat rock though from what I can tell from their album. This is a little harder in the beginning, Venny's voice being a bit gritty through some kind of filter. But it's got this cute indies rock band sound. It's a pretty upbeat rock song, all in all. You know you want it!!!! (Oh, the grammer nazi in me screams for using four exclamation marks.) Join the cult.

[BIO]

They sing, they dance, and they rap so well! 1TYM are Danny Im (Taebin), Oh Jin Hwan, Teddy Park, and Song Baek Kyoung. They're also a part of the ever popular YG family. 1TYM are one of the biggest hip hop/rap groups in Korea today.

[REVIEW]

Probably the most popular song, 1TYM is the first song I was exposed to from this group. My editor is all in "touch" with her Korean roots (but can I really talk this way? I mean, I'm a white girl in a psychedelic Asian music filled world) and was listening to Korean rap (on low, because you know, it's a small white town, lol) and I was like, "Who are you listening to?" and she said, "1TYM". So, there we go. She's also hooked me onto Mashimaro. Anyway, it's catchy, and um, kind of reminds me of ICP in some places (just the electronic sounds and some of the chanting, don't worry - it's not dirty... at least not what I can understand... XD).
